For chlorine-based disinfection methods, the chlorine concentration is often adjusted to values between 0.4 and 0.6 mg/l. The chemicals used are calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite and. For public pools also chlorine gas is also used.

Complimenting conventional disinfection with chlorine, disinfection or oxidation steps with Ultraviolet light and Ozone are also available. Both UV plants and Ozone plants can handle difficult conditions and/or reduce the use of sodium hypochlorite to a minimum.
